Therapy for ADHD & Autistic Individuals in Nova Scotia

Neurodivergence-affirming therapy supports ADHD and Autistic children, teens, and adults in understanding their nervous systems, identities, and support needs.

At ML Family Counselling, we view neurodivergence as a natural and valuable form of human diversity. Our therapy services move away from deficit-based or “fixing” models and focus on understanding, self-acceptance, and practical support that honours your unique needs and lived experience.

We offer affirming therapy for individuals who identify as ADHD, Autistic, AuDHD, or otherwise neurodivergent whether formally diagnosed, self-identified, or exploring this part of themselves.

Compassionate Therapy Tailored to Neurodivergent Experiences

Many neurodivergent individuals grow up feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed, or pressured to adapt to environments that were not designed with them in mind. Over time, this can lead to masking, burnout, anxiety, shame, or a sense of disconnection from oneself.

Neurodivergence-affirming therapy offers a supportive, non-judgmental space to explore these experiences without the expectation to change who you are. Therapy focuses on understanding how your brain and nervous system work, identifying strengths and support needs, while developing strategies that genuinely fit your life.

We work with neurodivergent individuals across the lifespan, including children, teens, adults, and families, and tailor therapy to each person’s communication style, sensory needs, and goals.

Our Neurodivergence Affirming Approach

Our therapists work from a neurodiversity-affirming framework which means:

  • ADHD and Autism are understood as differences, not deficits
  • Therapy centres lived experience and self-understanding
  • Goals are collaborative and defined by the client
  • Pacing, accommodations, and communication preferences are respected
  • Masking and burnout are understood as adaptive responses, not failures

Therapy focuses on what your nervous system has experienced, how your brain and body respond to stress, and how to create supports, boundaries, and strategies that align with your needs and lived experience.

Evidence-Based Approach

Neurodivergence-affirming therapy may draw from a range of evidence-based and integrative approaches that are thoughtfully adapted to neurodivergent processing styles.

These may include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) adapted for ADHD and Autistic clients, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, relational and attachment-based approaches, somatic and body-based strategies, and creative, strengths-based therapies. Therapeutic approaches are selected collaboratively and tailored to each individual’s goals, communication style, sensory needs, and lived experience.

Session times can be increased or reduced based on client needs.

Neurodivergent individuals may seek therapy at different stages of life, often around periods of change or increased demand. Common themes can include early emotional and sensory experiences in childhood, identity and independence in adolescence, and self-understanding, burnout, and life balance in adulthood.

How Neurodivergence-Affirming Therapy Can Support You

Neurodivergence-affirming therapy may support individuals who are:

  • Exploring or processing an ADHD or Autism diagnosis
  • Self-identifying or seeking clarity around neurodivergence
  • Navigating sensory sensitivities or nervous system overwhelm
  • Experiencing anxiety, burnout, or chronic stress
  • Recovering from long-term masking or people-pleasing
  • Supporting emotional intensity and overwhelm
  • Navigating relationships, boundaries, and communication differences
  • Processing identity development or late diagnosis
  • Seeking sustainable ways to manage school, work, and daily life

Therapy through a neurodiversity-affirming lens, supports deeper self-understanding, respects your experiences and explores ways of living that support your well-being.

No. Therapy is not about changing who someone is or making them “less ADHD” or “less Autistic.” The focus is on understanding needs, making sense of emotional and sensory intensity, and building support that allows life to feel more manageable and fulfilling.
Yes. We work with families supporting neurodivergent children and teens, when appropriate and aligned with consent and goals.
