Sex Therapy in Nova Scotia

Sex therapy supports individuals and partners with sexual health, intimacy, connection, and sexual well-being in a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment.

At ML Family Counselling, our sex therapy services are evidence-based and sex-positive honouring your experiences, values, and goals without judgment or shame.

Compassionate Therapy Tailored to You

Sexual concerns are common and can arise at many points throughout life. Sex therapy offers a supportive, confidential space to talk openly about sexuality, intimacy, and connection whether you are navigating challenges alone or within a relationship.

Sex therapy supports individuals and partners experiencing concerns related to desire, arousal, pain, intimacy, communication, identity, or mismatched needs. Our therapists create a respectful, non-judgmental environment where conversations about sex feel safe, normalized, and guided by your comfort level.

We offer sex therapy for individuals and partners who may be seeking support with:

  • Improving sexual health, intimacy, and connection
  • Addressing concerns related to desire, arousal, or pleasure
  • Navigating sexual pain or discomfort
  • Exploring mismatched sexual needs or expectations
  • Strengthening emotional and physical intimacy
  • Addressing the impact of stress, trauma, medical issues, or life transitions on sexuality
  • Exploring sexual identity, values, or relationship dynamics

Sex therapy is a supportive space where you don’t have to have everything figured out. The focus is on understanding your experiences and supporting meaningful, respectful change at a pace that feels right for you.

Our Trauma-Informed and Sex-Positive Approach

Our sex therapy services are grounded in trauma-informed care, emphasizing safety, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. This approach recognizes how past experiences, cultural messages, relationships, stressors, and trauma can shape sexual well-being.

Sex-positive therapy means your sexuality is approached with openness, respect, and affirmation and without assumptions or pressure. Rather than focusing on what is “wrong,” sex therapy centres on understanding what has shaped your experiences and what you want moving forward.

Evidence-Based Approach

Our sex therapy services are delivered by both Certified Sex Therapists and Sex-Therapy-Informed Therapists, allowing us to match clients with the level of specialization that best fits their needs.

Certified Sex Therapists have advanced training and formal certification in sex therapy and work with more complex and specialized sexual concerns. Sex-Therapy-Informed Therapists have additional training and clinical experience in sexual health and intimacy and may incorporate sex-therapy principles into broader individual or couples therapy work.

Sex therapy may draw from modalities such as sex-therapy-specific interventions, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Relational Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Somatic Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy.

Therapeutic approaches are thoughtfully selected and tailored to your needs, goals, and lived experience.
