Welcome!

My name is Leah Blackwood (she/her) and I am a Registered Counselling Therapist Candidate with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists, and I provide client-centred counselling services to all ages. However I have a particular interest in working with children, adolescents and teens, which comes from my experience as a youth care worker/case manager and the difficulties I experienced during those stages of development.

My areas of interest include anxiety, depression, grief, neurodiversity, Obsessive compulsive disorder, chronic pain/illness, and trauma. From a therapeutic perspective I work using an integrated approach, incorporating aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Gestalt therapy, and Mindfulness based techniques to support my clients.

Additionally I am a certified AutPlay Therapy Provider. AutPlay therapy is a framework for working with neurodivergent children and youth aged 3-18 and their caregivers which utilizes the therapeutic power of play to address mental health needs. With that being said each client is unique and as such we will work together to find the approach which best suits you.

Being a teen, child or adolescent can be difficult in today’s world. My ultimate goal is to help support children, teens, and adolescents in navigating the difficulties they are facing by learning tools to help manage life’s stress. My approach is rooted in a client centred, culturally sensitive, and trauma informed framework, with the understanding that my clients are the experts of their own lives. I strive to create an environment of safety, in which clients can feel validated in their emotions and supported in taking steps towards their goals.

Through our time together we will work collaboratively, as I believe an integral part of therapy is the therapeutic relationship. Together we will work to create a safe space where you can come to meet with someone who sees you, empathises with your experience, and holds space for you while you work to become your best self.

As a lover of learning I am committed to ongoing professional and personal growth, staying informed on the newest evidence-based therapeutic techniques and modalities is of the utmost importance to me to ensure you receive the highest level of care.

When I’m not supporting clients in my free time I love to spend time with friends, family, and pets. You can often find me out for hikes or by the beach. I enjoy reading, crafting, and trying new things.

Leah

I look forward to meeting with you, Leah
