Hi there!

My name is Meghan Scott, or you can call me Meg. Thank you for taking the time to read a little bit about me!

I’m a registered counselling therapist  with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process and that success in therapy is often associated to the therapeutic relationship. With that being said, as your therapist I will strive to create a safe environment in which you feel supported and comfortable being your true authentic self. Furthermore, I work from a feminist, and culturally sensitive lens.

Couples counselling is among my several areas of interest. Love and romantic relationships is an integral part of our lives, and maintaining a healthy and happy relationship is important in ensuring our own individual happiness, and fulfilment. As I progressed through my adolescence and into university, I became more and more aware of how much weight romantic relationships held both within my own life, and within the lives of those around me. However, having a healthy relationship can be difficult, even in the best of times. This demonstrated to me how powerful a couple’s counsellor could be. Whether your relationship is struggling or thriving, couples counselling can help couples mend issues, improve communication, or aid in maintaining the healthy dynamic of any couple. It is my personal belief that no two couples are the same, and therefore will all require their own, unique, personalized treatment plan. Couples, like individuals, come in all shapes, sizes, and genders, and all present their own unique challenges.

In addition to couple’s work, individual therapy, specifically involving issues such as trauma, PTSD, attachment issues, and mood disorders are among my various interests. My interests for working with these issues, and in the counselling world in general, largely stems from my own life experiences and upbringing. As an adolescent, I began experiencing my own mental health issues, along with many of my peers. Despite my own independent nature, I soon realized that I could not handle these problems alone.  These experiences allowed me to view the effectiveness of therapy, and also the importance of a solid support system and a stable community.

I work with an array of intervention techniques and therapeutic modalities with my clients. I rely on techniques deriving from cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, mindfulness therapy, and emotionally focused therapy. I believe that the interventions used will depend largely on the client’s needs, goals, and personality.

On a more personal note, I am originally from New Brunswick and moved to Halifax to attend university. I soon fell in love with Halifax and knew that it would become my forever home. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in science I decided to pursue a Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology. When I’m not with clients, I’m a homebody and you can usually find me with my cat, Tina by my side. I enjoy reading thrillers, running, yoga, and baking in my spare time. Like I do with my clients, I emphasize work-life balance in my own life as well!

My ultimate goal with ML Family Counselling is to help you reach your goals. Whether that is improving your relationship, processing trauma, learning new coping mechanisms, or simply working to maintain your current levels of happiness, we can work together to figure out the best means to help you live the life you desire.
